Our Eye Care Specialists Diagnose & Treat AMD

Macular degeneration, or age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a form of vision loss that affects the central portion of your retina. The macula is essential in supporting your ability to recognize faces and perform tasks that require the ability to visualize small details. Cheyenne Eye Clinic & Surgical Center provides macular degeneration diagnosis and treatment in Cheyenne, WY. There is no cure for macular degeneration, but we can help manage and monitor its progression. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.

Causes of AMD

The macula in the retina is a highly sensitive portion composed of millions of photoreceptive cells. These cells provide clear, central vision that is transmitted from the retina to the optic nerve. When macula cells and tissue start thinning, they lose their ability to receive incoming light. Macular degeneration is common with aging. The most common causes of macular degeneration include:

  • Age
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Lack of activity
  • Genetics

Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is often painless and asymptomatic. Progression of degeneration includes:

  • Reduced central vision
  • Increased difficulty viewing in low light levels
  • Increased blurriness of words in a book or on a computer
  • Viewing shadowy areas
  • Fuzzy vision
  • Difficulty recognizing faces

Types of Macular Degeneration

The types of macular degeneration include:

Wet Macular Degeneration – Wet AMD causes severe vision loss due to increased blood vessel growth. Blood and protein often leak below the macula due to increased blood vessel growth. This combination causes damage to the photoreceptors if left untreated.

Dry Macular Degeneration – Dry AMD is the most common type of macular degeneration. It is a slow deterioration of the macula’s cells, leading to vision loss.

Treatment for Macular Degeneration

There are no treatments to reverse AMD, but there are treatments that help delay the progression of macular degeneration and help improve vision.

  • Macular Degeneration Vitamins & Supplements – We recommend taking macular degeneration supplements like zeaxanthin, lutein, vitamins C and E, copper, lutein, and zinc to boost eye health.
  • Eye Injections – The most effective eye injection for macular degeneration is anti-VEGF therapy that involves injecting Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), a naturally-occurring protein in the body, into the eye to trigger the formation of new blood vessels.
  • Laser Surgery – Laser photocoagulation burns retina tissue to seal the leaky blood vessels that damage the macula.
  • Low Vision Aids – Specialized lenses can often help vision loss.
  • Submacular Surgery – Submacular surgery removes lesions of abnormal blood vessels and scar tissue from under the retina. It helps slow down visual impairment.
