Technology for Exceptional Care: Retina, Optic Nerve & Cornea

At Cheyenne Eye Clinic & Surgery Center, we use the latest and best technology to care for your eyes. We use these four, non-invasive devices to help diagnose issues with your vision and to create a plan for treatment.

OCT Machine: Scanner for Retinal and Optic Nerve Issues

The clinic’s optical coherence tomography (OCT) machine is a detailed diagnostic tool used to scan cross-sectional images of your eye. It creates a three-dimensional picture of the cornea, optic nerve, or retina. The OCT machine can uncover disorders of the optic nerve, changes in your eyes from glaucoma, macular problems and more.

During an OCT scan, you’ll rest your head on a support for 5-10 minutes while the machine analyzes your eye.

Pentacam: Scanner for Corneal Issues

The Pentacam can scan your eye in seconds, providing three-dimensional measurements of the cornea, the clear outer layer in the front of your eye that focuses what you see.

The Pentacam measures corneal thickness and creates a topographic map of both the front and back of the cornea. It can show issues in the cornea, especially important to recognize when planning cataract surgery.

Like the OCT machine, the Pentacam requires that you hold still, with your head resting on a platform, while the machine scans your eye.

Specular Microscope for the Cornea

Sometimes your doctor will need to look at the tiny cells in your eye. Cheyenne Eye Clinic’s specular microscope provides a fast method to analyze the cells on the inner surface of the cornea (the endothelium). The function of the endothelium is to keep the correct amount of fluid in the cornea. Problems with the endothelium can lead to swelling of the cornea and blurred vision.

The specular microscope shows specular reflected light from the corneal endothelium on a computer screen, where your doctor can see damage or issues that may need to be addressed.

B Scan: Ultrasound for the Back of the Eye

The B-scan ultrasound machine creates a two-dimensional, cross-section brightness area image of the very back of the eye. It’s a useful machine for diagnosing tumors, retinal detachment, and other conditions when to view through the pupil is poor from conditions like advanced cataracts or blood in the eye. This easy and painless procedure can be done with your eyes closed, as your doctor uses the machine to examine your eye with sound.
