The Cheyenne Eye Clinic has deep roots in the community. We’ve weathered the ups and downs together, and we’ve continued to grow, together.

This month we are looking back at those who came before us.

What’s in a Name?
The Cheyenne Eye Clinic and Surgery Center has gone by many names during its century-long history. It’s been Strader & Beck, Beck & Newman, Newman & Stump and Stump & Johnson. As Cheyenne grew, the clinic kept growing, registering the name Cheyenne Eye Clinic in 1971. At that time there were five doctors in the practice, Drs. Robert B. Stump, Ted Johnston, Don Iverson, Donald J. Lawler and Rodney A. Anderson.

Where Have We Been?
It’s tough to stand still for 100 years, and the Cheyenne Eye Clinic has occupied several locations. Dr. George L. Strader set up shop downtown in the Opera House Building at 17th Street and Capitol Avenue in 1903, when Cheyenne had a population of 10,000. He moved the practice to what’s now the Majestic Building for a short time, then settled in at the Hynds Building, where the practice stayed for decades, along with many other doctors’ offices. Times change, and by the late 1950s, most of Cheyenne’s doctors wanted to be between the town’s two hospitals. Following the trend, Stump moved to 1811 Logan Avenue in 1956. He took a few different offices in the area before he and his partners built their own office at 1805 E. 19^th Street in 1962.

Separate Ways
Not every partnership works perfectly: in 1976 Johnston kept the building, while Iverson, Lawler and Anderson left with the clinic’s name. A year later, the Cheyenne Eye Clinic had a brand-new building at its current location, 1300 E. 20^th Street.

Reunited
On April 1, 1994, the Johnston Eye Clinic on 19^th Street and the Cheyenne Eye Clinic on 20^th Street reunited as a common practice. The merger was negotiated as original partners Johnston, Lawler and Iverson retired, while their partners, Drs. Dirk Dijkstal, Shauna McKusker, Randy Johnston and John Millin came together to operate the clinic in one home.

Who are we now?
After the turn of the century, the Cheyenne Eye Clinic expanded to serve a growing community.

• In 2002 we doubled the size of the patient care area.
• In 2008 we opened the Cheyenne Eye Surgery Center.

• Now the Cheyenne Eye Clinic is able to serve 150 to 170 patients each day.
• More than 55 employees can help patients with needs from eyeglass prescriptions to glaucoma surgery.
